Is this 52.3 gsm paper really a valid replacement for original Tomoe River?
Yes — this paper works particularly well with Pilot Iroshizuku & Diamine Inks. Using these particular inks, our 52.3 gsm paper matches original Tomoe River paper ( old machine 7) in sheen and shading, while being even more resistant to bleed-through. Its bright white tone shows true ink color beautifully. If you love thin paper that performs, you’ll find a seamless transition here.
How much ghosting is there? Can I use both sides of the page?
At 52.3 gsm, some show-through is normal, but it’s minimal enough that writing on the reverse side is perfectly comfortable and readable. Ghosting is on par with or slightly better than classic 52 gsm Tomoe River. All 384 pages are genuinely useable.
Does the paper bleed, even with flex nibs or very wet inks?
No bleed at all. We’ve tested it with firehose pens, broad stubs, flex nibs, and extremely wet sheening and shimmering inks. The coating keeps all ink on the surface — not a single dot has ever come through.
Is there any feathering on this paper?
None. Should you use Pilot Iroshizuku or Diamine Inks, there is in general no feathering. Few inks like J Herbin do not work well on this paper, following some test that we made.
How does sheen and shading performance compare to old Tomoe River?
Outstanding. Heavily sheening inks produce the same dazzling, multi-dimensional effects. Shading is rich and nuanced, and the bright white background makes colours pop even more vividly than on older cream-tinted Tomoe River. Inks like Diamine, Pilot Iroshizuku, come alive on this paper.
What about drying times and smudging?
Because the paper is coated to maximize sheen and prevent bleed, drying times are slightly extended — very similar to Tomoe River. A blotting sheet or a few extra seconds solves it. This is the accepted trade-off for spectacular ink performance, and the fountain pen community understands it well.
What kinds of fountain pen ink work best?
Pilot Iroshizuku & Diamine Inks line perform beautifully — standard, shimmer and shade. Ink such as J Herbin,……., are not working well with this paper.
Does the notebook lay completely flat?
Yes. The sewn binding is specifically designed for a full 180° flat lay. Open to any page, press gently along the spine, and you have two even, stable writing surfaces — whether at a desk or on your lap. No spring-back, no hump, no fighting the spine.

Are there any differences between Blank and Dot besides the ruling?
Only the print. Paper, binding, cover, and page count are identical. The 5mm dot grid is printed in a subtle grey, easy to ignore when you want freeform writing, yet there when you need structure for journaling, bullets, or sketches.
Is the paper archival-safe? Will it yellow?
Yes. The paper is acid-free and archival-quality, designed to preserve your writing for decades and resist yellowing far better than ordinary paper. Your journals will stay crisp and timeless.
Can I use light watercolour washes or brush pens?
While it’s not watercolour paper, a light wash with a water brush or brush pen sits on the surface without immediate bleed. Heavy saturation may cause some cockling due to the thinness, but the paper holds up. Primarily it is a premium fountain pen paper.
How does it compare to Sanzen Tomoe River S, Cosmo Air Light, or Midori MD?
Our 52 gsm paper is closest to original 52 gsm Tomoe River — thin, sheen-forward, and bleed-proof. Sanzen Tomoe River S has a different texture and slightly less sheen; Cosmo Air Light is thicker and mutes sheen; Midori MD offers more feedback and faster dry times but far less ink drama.
